«Ship's doctor» on board the Tangaroa raft

Bjarne Krekvik, ship's master of the Tangaroa raft, will also be medically responsible for the crew during the expedition across the Pacific Ocean. The last thing he did before leaving for Peru was practicing advanced first aid procedures under the guidance of medical practitioner Kjell Erik Strømskag in Molde, Norway.

- If we come to need assistance from the outside world, worst case is that we will have to wait for as long as 4-5 days before anyone can reach us, Bjarne says. - The distances are huge out there, and we cannot count on any other vessels to be in the same area when we need them. That's why we have to be self-sufficient to as large a degree as possible. We need to be prepared for serious things to happen, but we will of course do everything we can to avoid injuries in the first place. We will rehearse safety procedures, and have strict rules onboard the raft when it comes to safety precautions in order to avoid injuries and emergency situations like for instance 'man overboard'. In this way we hope to reduce the risk of something disastrous to happen, he concludes.

Bjarne Krekvik is far from being a rookie sailor. He is quite experienced both as a ship's master and as a first-aider. As part of his examination for the coastal master's certificate he joined a comprehensive first aid course, and he has worked several years as medical orderly of the Home Defence Core. Still this repetition exercise with the medical practitioner was important. As an extra safe guard for the Tangaroa crew, Strømskag has promised to guide them online if needed during the expedition.
